Background
I am a marine ecologist specialising in marine sessile benthic communities, also known as biofouling communities. The main requirement of biofouling species is hard substrates on which to settle and grow, which is why these communities are found worldwide. They can cause conflicts with human activities when they attach to anthropogenic structures such as boats and marine energy infrastructure. The ecological importance of biofouling, combined with its impact on the marine sector, makes it a rich area for research with many avenues yet to be explored. Additionally, as part of the marine science community, I am committed to a broader understanding of the marine environment, and I have a deep interest in all aspects of marine science.
Research
I am a marine science PhD student at Newcastle University and British Antarctic Survey, based at the Dove Marine Laboratory. My work investigates the effects of climate change and marine heatwaves on sessile benthic communities. The aim of this work is to investigate ‘the biofouling future’ using novel heated settlement panels to investigate how biofouling communities might respond to future climate scenarios and increasingly frequent marine heatwaves. These communities will be assessed using visual taxonomic identification, as well as cutting-edge molecular techniques to examine the genetic responses of organisms to temperature change. The goal of this work is to provide insights into the future of biofouling species, with global relevance and the potential to influence the marine industry.
