New preprint: Identifying the Fusarium species involved in foot rot disease of faba beans in the UK using a combined molecular and microbiological approach

Check out this new preprint led by our very own Basem Attar: Identifying the Fusarium species involved in foot rot disease of faba beans in the UK using a combined molecular and microbiological approach!

The foot and root rot disease complex is a devastating broad bean productivity globally, including in the UK (the third largest producer). Despite this, the causal agents of the disease are poorly characterised. Several studies highlight that multiple pathogens are responsible for the disease, and the identity of these can vary regionally, but they are entirely unknown within the UK. Basem set out to identify the causal agents using both molecular and microbiological approaches!

The previous reports of foot and root rot disease causal agents.

Through a nationwide survey, several causal agents were identified within the genus Fusarium. This information will help to establish and improve monitoring and management of this devastating crop disease across the UK and beyond. Check out the preprint for more information and keep your eyes peeled for the peer-reviewed paper!
